New Hampshire’s Executive Council is poised this week to expand a program to help students with disabilities transition into employment, continuing the growth of an effort that launched in 2016.
A new contract before the council would expand the state’s IMPACCT program – the “Inspiring the Mastery of Postsecondary Achievement in College, Career, and Training” pre-employment transition service program – and bring it to the state’s Seacoast region.
Run in part by Granite State Independent Living, the IMPACCT program provides teaching for high school students who request it, allowing the students to enter 14 weeks of instruction during the school year and five weeks during the summer. That instruction includes counseling to help with job searches, applying for colleges, self advocacy, finding work-based learning experiences, and training for workplace readiness. The courses can count as credits toward a student’s graduation.
Currently, Granite State Independent Living has been jointly operating the program with the Department of Education’s Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation in Berlin, Concord, Littleton, Manchester, and Nashua. The exact location of the new expansion in the Seacoast region has not been specified in the contract before the council.
The contract, brought by the Department of Education, would expand the price of the contract from $2.2 million to $2.6 million through 2024.
Since 2016, 713 students have participated in the program, the department has noted; 81 percent receive individualized education programs in their schools.
